Oliver councillor looks to win seat in Penticton

Community safety is Larry Schwartzenberger’s No. 1 priority

Instead of seeking re-election in Oliver this fall, a current town councillor is eyeing a seat in Penticton.

Larry Schwartzenberger has thrown his name in the hat to be a Penticton city councillor, after serving in the same role in Oliver since 2013.

An employee of Penticton’s Time Winery, Schwartzenberger is one of four individuals to file their nominations papers for a spot on city council, as of Aug. 31.

“For me, community safety is priority No. 1,” Schwartzenberger told Black Press. “The RCMP detachment in Penticton is one of the busiest in the province. One of my goals on council will be to increase the budgets so we can acquire new RCMP officers and expand bylaw enforcement.”

Originally from Calgary, Alta., Schwartzenberger won a seat on Oliver council after a 2013 by-election. He has since been re-elected twice.

Approving a number of affordable housing projects and moving forward with development on Station Street are among his proudest moments as an Oliver councillor.

“We finally got a full-service hotel, which Oliver desperately needed and now we’re going to be breaking ground on the new municipal plaza that will be on Station Street,” he said when looking back at his nine years on council. “We’ve had our challenges, but we’ve also had our successes as well.”

Schwartzenberger moved to Penticton in June 2020.

“I really enjoyed my time on council in Oliver and representing the citizens there, and I’d just like to continue that for Penticton,” he added.

Public office roles for the Oct. 15 election in Penticton include mayor, six council seats and four positions as a school trustee.

The nomination period ends Sept. 9 at 4 p.m.
