The open burning season within the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen is about to come to an end.

Open burning of permitted burning materials will close at midnight on Friday, April 15. The closure is outlined in Bylaw No. 2898, 2020, a bylaw to regulate open burning within five fire protection areas within the regional districts. The affected fire protection areas are Anarchist, Kaleden, Naramata, Okanagan Fall, and Willowbrook.

Those who have property outside of these areas are asked to check with their local authorities or with the province.

Each year, open burning is prohibited from April 15 to Oct. 15. To access the Burn Authorization application, please visit the regional district website and select Permits & Licences, or access the Public Parcel Viewer to view Fire District Boundary locations.

Campfires are permitted after April 15, subject to the bylaw. Campfires may not exceed 0.5 metres in height and 0.5 metres in width, and are specifically for heating or warmth, cooking, or Indigenous ceremonial purpose. Campfires may be restricted by the fire chief at any time.

In 2021, summer campfire bans were put in place in much of the province because of the risk of wildfires.
