A new multi-family housing development on 89th Street in Osoyoos received final approval on Tuesday, March 22.

The development would add 40 rental apartments to the community as well as five new townhomes. Construction would be required to be underway within two years of the development permit’s issuance.

The project at 6828 89th Street had already been to public hearing on March 8, with a public information session before that on Feb. 22.

Letters were submitted from the Watermark Resort and Destination both in full support of the project bringing more rental units to the community.

According to the most recent housing needs assessment for the town, Osoyoos needed an additional 129 housing in 2020 and 137 by 2025. That number was without taking into account the need to house seasonal workers.

The development was initially presented to council in November 2021. At that time council requested changes to the original plan and the design of the multi-family development was changed to have 40 units instead of 47 and to cover less of the property.

The five townhomes will face Nighthawk Drive.

As part of the consultation process, the Ministry of Transportation found no issues with the project, and the school district sent their own letter of support for the project.
