Penticton and Area Cooperative Enterprises (PACE) is looking to provide a local solution to the problem of pocket coil mattresses.
For years, PACE has manually disassembled conventional mattresses for South Okanagan landfills.
Unlike conventional mattresses, a pocket coil mattress has each coil wrapped in fabric, with the nearest facility capable of shredding mattresses located in Hope.
In order to receive $40,000 in grant funding from the Economic Trust of the Southern Interior to develop tools to improve the process of disposing of pocket coil mattresses, PACE needs to find a partner for the project.

Ideally, PACE is looking to partner with a manufacturer or retailer that would also be able to help advocate for changes in how pocket coil mattresses are assembled in order to make it easier to break them down.
In 2020, PACE broke down close to 9,000 mattresses, with another 1,000 that were pocket coil and unable to be recycled.
