Penticton firefighters will be pulling for awareness for Muscular Dystrophy on June 11.
Teams of eight will be pulling a fire truck weighing 25,000 to 50,000 pounds in a race to the finish line against Penticton’s finest firefighters to raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy Canada and their mission to enhance the lives of the 50,000 Canadians affected by the disease.
Firefighters have been partnered with Muscular Dystrophy Canada for over 60 years.
They are the organization’s strongest and longest standing supporters, and raise approximately $3 million for Muscular Dystrophy Canada every year, across the country. The money raised by the firefighters aids people affected by muscular dystrophy by helping purchase essential medical and mobility equipment, providing support services, and funding leading research towards a cure.
Muscular dystrophy is the name for a group of genetic problems, called neuromuscular disorders, that are characterized by progressive weakness of the body’s muscles.
Some people with muscular dystrophy may lose the ability to walk, speak, and ultimately, breathe. For some it is fatal, and there is currently no cure.
The truck pull fundraiser takes place at 9 a.m. in the 400 block of the Downtown Penticton Association Market.
