A new commander is ready to take over the Penticton RCMP.

Insp. Ted De Jager has been named Detachment Commander of Penticton South Okanagan Similkameen Regional Detachment in an announcement Wednesday from RCMP National Headquarters.

“It is a tremendous benefit to have Ted as the incoming officer in charge,” said Brad Haugli, commander of the B.C. RCMP Southeast District. “His extensive operational background in a leadership role, along with his strong focus on crime reduction and community engagement, will certainly make him a perfect fit to meet the needs of the communities in the region.”

De Jager is originally from Bowmanville, Ont. He graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1987 and served in the Canadian Forces for 15 years as a combat engineer officer with postings throughout Canada as well as overseas before joining the RCMP in 1997.

He was first posted to the Surrey detachment. In 2011 he was promoted to inspector and went on to serve in a variety of roles including operations development, where he was responsible for creating service delivery and staffing models for provincial detachments.

In Sept. 2014 he transferred to the Mission detachment as the officer in charge and focused on crime reduction and community engagement. De Jager is currently chair of the crime prevention committee for the B.C. Association of Chiefs of Police.

“We were looking for an officer moving up the ranks on his career path with a strong willingness to implement proactive and innovative strategies for crime reduction. Someone who will integrate into our community and deliver results,” said Mayor Andrew Jakubeit. “The South Okanagan region has a variety of needs and we are pleased to have a commander that understands both rural and urban policing.”

De Jager’s arrival date in Penticton is still to be determined.
