Penticton residents will have plenty of time to make their opinions known about the latest proposal for the former Kampe estate.

On May 3, council approved sending the 84-unit strata townhouse development to a public hearing on June 20, following a public engagement campaign.

Coun. Katie Robinson expressed her enthusiasm for the project, particularly when compared to the previous proposal for two six-storey apartment buildings.

“This looks 100 per cent better to me with half the density of the first proposal, and I guess sometimes good things come to those that wait,” said Robinson. “It’s a great day for housing in Penticton.”

In 2021, a different developer had brought forward a plan to build two six-storey apartment buildings on the property, which would have added 151 units of housing. That plan was scaled back following public engagement to 130 units before being shot down by council.

This proposal will receive a lengthy public engagement period from May until the June public hearing, which will including a project page on shapeyourcitypenticton.com, information sessions for the public and consultation with groups including the Penticton Indian Band and the Friends of the Oxbows.

With a push for cycling in the community, Coun. Judy Sentes noted that the proposal from the developer would pay cash-in-lieu of including city bylaw required spaces for storing bicycles.

“I find it so curious, we’re trying so hard to convince people to always consider an option to the car, and yet there’s no consideration here for bicycle parking,” said Sentes.

The proposal would also see 111 new trees planted on the property, and the recognition of the possible impacts on the riparian areas of the nearby oxbows.
