Some Penticton residents may experience water discolouration for more than a month when they turn on their taps starting next week.

The city is launching its annual unidirectional water main flushing program, set to take place between Oct. 11 and Nov. 20.

Residents are being advised that the flushing process during this time may result in their water supply showing sediment and discolouration.

“If you do experience dirty water, run the cold water tap until the water clears up,” the city wrote in a press release.

Though bacterially harmless, this sediment may cause some discolouration to laundry if not detected, they added.

The city expects the program to result in system improvements and cost savings, including increased water velocity, taste and odour control and reduced usage.

“To avoid any inconvenience, check water colour prior to using,” the press release reads.

For more information, residents are asked to visit the city’s water services page or call the public works department at 250-490-2500.
