Penticton road crews clearing snow since 4 a.m., says the city

Between 5 to 10 cm of snow expected in Penticton on Tuesday: Environment Canada

City of Penticton crews have been clearing roads of snow since 4 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 20, as they continue to deal with the fallout from a winter blast heard across the province.

Local crews started their days by focusing on Priority No. 1 roads and will continue to do so until the snow lets up, according to the city.

“Once the storm lets up and Priority 1 routes are cleared, they will move on to Priority 2 routes,” the city wrote in an email to the Western News.

Crews are currently on track, according to the email, and have been clearing the main corridors, sidewalks and priority stairways all morning long.

Environment Canada is calling for 10 cm of snow to fall in Penticton on Tuesday. Daytime temperatures with the wind chill, meanwhile, could feel like -25 C.

“If you need to leave home today, give yourself extra time and drive to the conditions,” the city wrote on Facebook.

Penticton road crews are currently equipped with the following:

• Five large snowplow trucks

• Four rapid-response snowplow trucks

• One loader

• Two anti-icing-equipped trucks

• Two backhoes

• Three mowers with snow attachments

• One municipal tractor (for clearing walking paths and bike lanes)

• One ATV with blade

Environment Canada is warning about the risk of frostbite on Tuesday night, with temperatures plus the wind chill expected to reach as low as -30 C.
