Cottonwood trees are burning from the inside and are on top of Fortis gas line: Keremeos Fire

An out of control brush fire is threatening high pressure gas lines in Cawston Sunday evening.

According to Keremeos Fire Chief Jordy Bosscha, a bush fire quickly spread down Daly Drive in Cawston, off Highway 3 Sunday afternoon. As of 6:30 p.m., the situation remained dangerous, said Bosscha.

Video of the fire shows trees and bushes on fire as well as scorched earth and trees along Daly Drive.

“We have an issue with these large cottonwood trees. The fire is inside them from bottom to top,” said Bosscha. “We can’t action them as they have been deemed unsafe to work around and are on top of a high pressure gas line.”

Fire crews are currently waiting for Fortis gas to arrive on scene.

It’s not known at this time what caused the fire.

More to come as information becomes available.
