Prison tours booked solid

There is no longer availability for public tours of the Okanagan Correctional Centre this weekend.

The 10th and largest correctional centre in B.C. is set to start phasing in inmates in January 2017 and the public can take tours starting Oct. 21.

Around 3,000 visitors are set to tour the Okanagan Correctional Centre this weekend as the public tours have been completely booked.

The community’s interest led to BC Corrections expanding the amount of tour dates to double the original plan.

“We have now booked 3,000 visitors and the tours are full,” said Cindy Rose, BC Corrections spokesperson. “The public interest definitely exceeded our expectations and we are thrilled we have been able to provide this opportunity to thousands of residents in the region.”

Visitors are set to have the rare opportunity to see areas of a correctional centre that are usually off limits to the public and learn about the day-to-day operations of the correctional centre.

The $200-million facility, the largest correctional centre in B.C., is set to start phasing inmates in January 2017.
