Lots of businesses are joining in a community effort to raise funds to help victims of the Fort McMurray fires, according to organizers.

Diana Stirling is hoping for a substantial turnout Sunday for what she called the "community tally rally."

"We have a real range of businesses. We have sole proprietors that don't work on the weekend that are donating half of their earnings from today (Friday). We have service based businesses writing a check, we have businesses that are open on the weekend choosing their time slot," said Stirling, adding that Elephant Island, Hillside Winery and others on the Naramata Bench are choosing to donate tasting room fees to the drive.

Stirling says 50 per cent of Sunday's admission fees to LocoLanding will be donated to the community fundraising effort, which will go to the Red Cross fundraising account.

"We are pretty excited about the businesses that are planning on coming down and joining the community donation tally rally. It should be a wonderful show of support from Penticton," said Stirling. "That's the whole goal, to show as a community is that we are here working together to provide one donation to Fort Mac."

Businesses should use #pentictoncares to let the community know what they are offering.

Stirling has asked businesses to come into LocoLanding Adventure Park between 4 and 5 p.m. on May 8. She expecting to be able to let everyone know what the grand total is around 5 p.m.

"It is awesome, this community. I think that people all wanted to do something, they just didn't know how to do it or what to do," said Stirling. Providing a venue, a time slot and bringing people together seems to have provided that focus, she added.
