As school is back in full swing, the City of Penticton is reminding motorists to slow down and pay extra attention when entering school zones.

“We want to be as proactive as we can during the school season,” says Bylaw Services supervisor, Tina Siebert in a news release. “Bylaw Enforcement Officers are monitoring school zones at the start and end of classes to ensure that motorists obey the signs.”

The Bylaw Services Department and the RCMP offer the following tips to ensure safety in school zones:

— Adjust your speed to 30 kilometres when entering a school zone

— Obey posted school zone speed limits and “no stopping” zones near schools

— Pay attention to crosswalks, crossing guards and school buses

— Be aware of school drop-off and pick-up zones and rules of the school

— Talk to your children about pedestrian safety – such as how to watch for vehicles and look both ways before crossing the street

— Be alert – put down distractions such as cell phones or food, and be aware of your surroundings

The speed limit through school zones is 30 km per hour from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on all days that classes are in session.
