Revelstoke’s Pride crosswalk is back and bright

Revelstoke’s rainbow crosswalk was repainted, bringing some pride to MacKenzie Ave.

After a winter of snow and snow removal, the colours of the crosswalk at MacKenzie and Third St. had faded, but earlier this week they were repainted for the season. The fresh paint helps prepare the town for national Pride Month, which celebrates the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

Pride Month is recognized nationally in June, but pride events often happen across the country from June–Sep. Pride had been lacking on the west side of MacKenzie since the Pride flag at the United Church went missing.

The incident played out over a weekend in January. On Friday the flag was there, but by Sunday it was gone. Neither the church nor the community knew what had happened to it. A member of the church made a post on Facebook urging the person responsible to come forward and return the flag, but no one ever did.

While the Church said at the time that they had plans to install another flag, they maintained that the value of the flag wasn’t the issue, but the principle of the theft.

In the absence of the flag, the west side of Revelstoke’s main downtown core has been without much colour and pride. Now that the crosswalk has been repainted, the town is regaining a bit more of both.

The pride crosswalk was originally painted in June 2021 to celebrate Pride Month. At the time, Mayor Gary Sulz referred to the crosswalk as a ‘signal’ to the community that the city is inclusive. The repainting of the crosswalk is a re-commitment to its pledge of inclusivity.

Last year, Revelstoke had its first official pride event, hosted by Queer Shred Revelstoke at Kovach Park.

Plans have not yet been announced for an event this year, but the Revelstoke Review will release details as they are made available.
