A section of Alberni Street between Westminster Avenue and Vernon Avenue in Penticton is now closed to vehicle traffic to allow for the completion of the new Four Points by Sheraton Hotel at 903 Vernon Avenue.
Residents in the area are advised to use alternate routes including Comox Street, Vernon Avenue and Creston Avenue.
The south end of Alberni Street at Eckhardt Avenue remains open for area residents as well as for visitors to the South Okanagan Events Centre to access parking. This closure also affects the Alberni Street park-and-ride stops for Route #70. For more information, visit bctransit.com.
A review of the transportation network in the area is underway as part of planning for longer-term infrastructure upgrades to accommodate future development of the North Gateway.
It was April 2022, when Mundi Hotel Enterprises held a groundbreaking ceremony for its six-storey, 105-room Four Points by Sheraton hotel going in beside Penticton Trade and Convention Centre.
The Vernon Avenue hotel will also include a 100-seat restaurant and amenities like a pool and fitness room.
It is expected to be open in early summer.
The new hotel will allow for new and different conventions and events to come to the city, said Dean Clarke at the time. Clarke is the manager of Spectra, the company that operates the PTCC and SOEC.
“We will now be able to solicit and bid on new conventions, meetings and special event business, which we have previously not met hosting requirements,” said Clarke.
Hundreds of young hockey players are here to compete in the CSSHL Western Championships and will likely stay in the new hotel once it is open.
