Severe thunderstorm watch for Penticton, South Okanagan

Environment Canada has issued a warning regarding a risk of severe thunderstorms expected this afternoon and evening.

Environment Canada released a severe thunderstorm warning as conditions are shaping up for the  ossibility of storms in Penticton and the South Okanagan capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

The storms are expected to hit the area over the afternoon and evening.

"Some of these thunderstorms may become severe. The main threat is a heavy downpour of 25mm/hour. Strong wind gusts and moderate hail are also possible," said a release from Environment Canada.

Fast moving water across a road can sweep a vehicle away. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Intense lightning is likely with any storm that develops. Stay indoors when a thunderstorm strikes. There isn't a place outside that is safe during a thunderstorm. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year.
