RCMP in the South Okanagan-Similkameen said they have seen a sharp increase in the number of telephone scams.

In particular, scammers are identifying themselves as a computer support person wanting to gain access to the person’s computer to make updates.

“The scammer then demands payment, typically in the form of untraceable gift cards and makes threats should they not receive the funds,” said Const. James Grandy in a news release.

RCMP said the scam often originates from outside of Canada, however their phone number usually appears to be local. The fake computer technician may pretend to be from Microsoft and claim they need remote access to a person’s computer.

“RCMP would like to remind the public that Microsoft does not send unsolicited email messages or make unsolicited phone calls to request personal or financial information or fix a computer,” said Grandy.

Anyone who believes they are the victim of any scam are encouraged to report it to their local RCMP detachment, or call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
