Winter weather has put a temporary halt to a project to upgrade Kaleden park, the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen has confirmed.

Phase No. 2 of the Pioneer Park development project will now begin on Nov. 15, instead of its original start date of Nov. 8.

Located 15 minutes south of Penticton, Kaleden’s primary public park is set to have its septic system replaced and the concrete pad adjacent to the washrooms removed.

“Upgrading amenities and improving accessibility are important steps to ensuring the community can enjoy Pioneer Park for years to come,” said Subrina Monteith, director of Electoral Area “I,” Kaleden.

Erick Thompson, communications coordinator at the RDOS, said that the recent weather has forced the region to adjust its timeline for the project.

The second phase will now conclude on Dec. 9, after its delayed start.

During this time, the washrooms and surrounding area will be closed because of construction.

“Areas impacted by the concrete pad removal will be safely cordoned off for the next several months in preparation for the 2023 construction phase,” the RDOS said in a press release.

The next phase, expected to begin in spring 2023, will be partially grant-funded and will focus on upgrades to the pathway and improved accessibility measures.

Kaleden’s park is at 201 Ponderosa Avenue and serves as a gathering place in the community for locals and visitors alike.

The RDOS started planning the multi-phase upgrade project in 2017.
