Board members and volunteers of the Summerland Community Arts Council have launched the Strong Arts Strong Communities Annual Giving Campaign which runs through May.
The arts council is a volunteer-led umbrella organization covering 14 arts groups and several hundred individuals.
The campaign emphasizes the importance of the arts to the strength of the community — an investment in the arts supports the community.
“The arts enhance well-being and quality of life while creating jobs, attracting investments, and stimulating tourism and consumer purchases. They also generate taxes paid to provincial, federal, and local governments,” said campaign organizer Susan McIver.
In a recent survey of Summerland residents during the preparation of the Cultural Plan, 79 per cent said arts and heritage improve the climate for business.
While activities were limited during the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, the arts council has now resumed full activities and is looking to expand.
The gallery is now holding shows, Friday Night Live performances, workshops and children’s art programs. The street banner project will also resume for this spring and summer, as will the summer Music in the Park outdoor concerts.
Additional programs are also in the works.
“We want to want to develop a program, Cool Arts, for adolescents and adults with special needs,” said administrator Sonja Waller.
