Cannabis production and retail sales will be on the agenda at an upcoming special meeting of Summerland’s municipal council.

The special meeting, to be held Thursday, Sept. 27, will have two public hearings on two bylaws related to cannabis.

Council has given first two readings to two separate bylaws, one governing the retail sales of recreational cannabis and one governing the zoning for licensed production of cannabis.

Both these bylaws require a public hearing before they can move forward.

The retail sales bylaw amends Summerland’s zoning bylaw to allow Retail Store, Licensed Cannabis to the Central Business (CB1) and Shopping Centre (CB2) zones.

Other changes to retail and commercial designations, including the definition of Retail Store, General and Home Occupation are being amended to exclude cannabis retail sales or production in these areas.

The bylaw surrounding the production of cannabis also amends the municipality’s zoning bylaw.

This zoning bylaw amendment is to consider adding Cannabis, Licensed Production as a permitted use in the Light Industrial (M1) zone and the Heavy Industrial (M2) zone.

The bylaw also will prohibit licensed production of cannabis in agricultural zones unless it meets the Agricultural Land Commission’s guidelines for a permitted farm use.
