The municipality of Summerland has received a rebate from FortisBC in support of a street lighting upgrade project.

The cheque for $89,000 was presented on Tuesday afternoon.

“Summerland is committed to taking a leadership role by investing in projects that save energy, reduce expenses and improve the safety of our community,” Mayor Toni Boot said.

“Upgrading our streetlights to LEDs provides our community with high quality lighting at a fraction of the cost while enhancing our commitment to dark skies and protecting wildlife corridors.”

She added that the lighting can be much more precise with LED lights.

The switch to LED lights has reduced energy consumption by more than half. It is also expected to reduce operations and maintenance costs due to the longer life cycle of the LED lights.

Summerland upgraded 902 streetlights. The savings from this is expected to be more than 594,000 kilowatt hours a year. The upgrade is expected to reduce operating expenses by $72,000 a year.

“We appreciate the District of Summerland’s ongoing pursuit of energy savings and congratulate them on this latest upgrade,” said Juan Rincon, key account manager, commercial and industrial with FortisBC.
