Summerland wants climate change vulnerability assessed

Cost of updated documents estimated at up to $90,000

The municipality of Summerland is applying for grants from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and the Union of B.C. Municipalities.

The grant money, through the Municipal Asset Management Program, is for the development of an emergency management hazard, risk and vulnerability assessment and community climate risk and vulnerability assessment.

The municipality will commit $15,000 towards the costs of this initiative from the Climate Action Reserve.

The grant funding is to rewrite the community’s hazard, risk and vulnerability assessment and to create a community climate risk and vulnerability assessment.

The community’s hazard, risk and vulnerability assessment document was originally written in 2006. Since that time, the provincial framework has been updated and as a result, a new document is required tup align with the present framework.

The community climate risk and vulnerability assessment document is closely related to the hazard, risk and vulnerability assessment document.

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities grant would provide 80 per cent of costs up to $50,000 and the Union of B.C. Municipalities grant would provide 50 per cent of costs up to $25,000.

Estimates from the municipality put the cost of this document at up to $90,000.

If the municipality receives funding for just one of the grant applications, municipal staff will amend the costs and scope as required.
