Summerland seniors care society acquires passenger van

Donation from Summerland Health-Care Auxiliary covers half the cost of the vehicle

Parkdale Place Housing Society has received a donation of $28,330 from the Summerland Health-Care Auxiliary.

The donation allows the facility to purchase a passenger van.

The housing society is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing housing for mid to low-income seniors, has wanted expand the services offered to its residents.

The passenger van will enhance the social and recreational opportunities for residents, many of whom no longer drive and find even simple shopping challenging.

The van will provide access to essential services and a variety of social, recreational and educational outings, fostering a greater sense of community and well-being, the society says.

The journey to acquiring this van began when a board member discovered an advertisement for a used 2020 Ford Transit van at Swan City Motors in Vernon.

Recognizing the potential impact of this vehicle, Charmaine Kramer, chief executive officer of Parkdale Place Housing Society, submitted a donation request to the Summerland Health-Care Auxiliary, seeking support for 50 per cent of the total cost.

Despite initial uncertainties about whether the auxiliary would consider funding a used vehicle, the request was met with a positive response.

On Feb. 4, the auxiliary provided a cheque covering exactly 50 per cent of the van’s cost, without any formal ceremony.

Members of the Parkdale Place Housing Society say the auxiliary’s support has allowed them to acquire a van that will enhance the lives of residents.
