Penticton’s newest restaurant is already stopping traffic and it isn’t even open for business yet.

A 90-tonne crane took up a portion of Main Street as new equipment was hauled up to the rooftop of the 300 Block Casual Steakhouse, which takes over where The Elite once was.

“That crane was huge but we needed it because we had to take all the equipment out of the kitchen, the biggest piece being 700 pounds. As a restaurant you expel the kitchen air up through the duct into the atmosphere and you have to have equipment for make up air,” said Fred Trainor, of the piece of equipment that was hoisted to the roof.

Trainor said it has been an interesting journey opening a new restaurant, he even got in on the action this morning with the crane.

“It has been fun, I have never closed a road before. I even put on a safety vest and helped people navigate the street as a flagger,” he said.

The restaurant continues to go through renovations, both inside and out. They are also repurposing the iconic The Elite sign with the neon coming down and the skin, a new sign will go up sometime next week.

“I keep saying we are going to be open May 3, come hell or high water and all our staff are committed to making that happen,” said Trainor.
