The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen will begin a phased tree removal program for eight Lombardy poplar trees at the south end of a park in Kaleden.
The eight trees, at the south end of Pioneer Park, have been a feature of Kaleden’s beachfront park for decades, but they have been declining in recent years and can no longer be safely maintained.

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen has monitored the condition of the trees and worked to mitigate potential risks to the public, through pruning.
Working with certified arborists, the regional district has concluded that mitigation techniques will not be feasible for much longer. As a result, the regional district will begin a phased tree removal and replacement program for the trees
In 2020, three of the trees will be removed with pruning to take place on the remaining five trees in the coming week. Through an annual tree replacement program initiated by Kaleden Parks and Recreation, new trees will be planted in the spring of 2021.
Continued monitoring and management of the remaining Lombardy Poplar trees will continue over the coming years, to maintain these shade trees as long as possible.
Regional district staff expect the remaining trees will need to be removed in the next two to four years, with continued planting enhancement in Kaleden Parks occurring throughout that time.
