Gregory Stanley Nield leaves the Penticton courthouse following his first court appearance in December.

With his hands cuffed behind his back, the man accused of beating a doctor at Penticton Regional Hospital sat quietly through his latest court hearing Wednesday.

Gregory Stanley Nield, 30, is charged with aggravated assault in connection with a Dec. 5 attack on Dr. Rajeev Sheoran during an interview in the psychiatric unit at PRH.

Nield appeared Wednesday in provincial court in Penticton by videoconference from Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre. He said nothing during the brief hearing other than “thank you” when it ended.

Drew Tyler, who appeared on behalf of the Vancouver-based lawyer representing Nield, had the matter put over until Feb. 18 to allow time for more discussions with the Crown.

Out of the dozen people who appeared in provincial court in Penticton by videoconference Wednesday from jails around B.C., Nield, an accomplished Brazilian jiu-jitsu fighter, was the only one whose hands remained cuffed during the proceedings.

Police said Sheoran suffered a broken jaw and facial injuries in the attack, while the B.C. Nurses’ Union said he was lucky to have survived.

Separate investigations into the incident by both Interior Health and WorkSafeBC are still underway.

Calls to Dr. Sheoran’s office this week went to straight to voicemail.
