The Independent Investigation Office of B.C. is investigating an officer-involved shooting involving the Summerland RCMP detachment.
The incident occurred on Saturday, July 2, at around 3 a.m. when a Summerland police officer stopped to pull over a vehicle at Rosedale Avenue and Prairie Valley Road, for driving-related matters.
Police followed the vehicle, which then travelled along Giant’s Head Road and onto Milne Road.
The police officer attempted to stop the suspect vehicle, which allegedly struck the police vehicle as it left the area. The vehicle was later located, at about 7 a.m.
The officer fired several shots during the interaction. The officer was not injured.
Several hours later, a man with a gunshot wound arrived at the hospital. Police say the injury may be connected to this incident.
While the injury is serious, police say the man is believed to be in stable condition.
Investigators are now looking to determine if the man’s injuries are connected to the actions of police.
The RCMP Regional General Investigation Service and the Penticton Serious Crime Unit are investigating.
Marten Youssef, a spokesperson for the Independent Investigation Office, said investigators have already spoken to witnesses in this incident.
However, the length of time of the investigation is not yet known.

The Independent Investigation Office is mandated to investigate when there is a reportable injury as defined by the Police Act.
Reportable injuries include injuries resulting from the discharge of a firearm and injuries requiring emergency medical care and transfer to a hospital.
