Government Street was closed to traffic in both directions after a fire broke out in a home in the 1400 block.
The residents of the home had already evacuated by the time firefighters arrived on scene, after the black smoke billowing from the house resulted in a number of 911 calls about 3 p.m.
The fire was extinguished quickly, but fire crews remained on scene for two hours checking for hot spots and clearing up.
Emergency Social Services has taken three people into care.
