Wildfire west of Osoyoos classified as out of control

B.C. Fire Information services said two helicopters and 28 firefighters are on scene

UPDATE: 4:25 p.m.

An evacuation alert is in place for the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen as the Richter Creek firecontinues to grow.

BC Wildfire considers this fire out of control at this time. Itis currently estimated to be 400 hectares in size.

A crew of 40 firefighters are on site and being assisted bytwo helicopters as of late Tuesday afternoon. Personnelwill remain on site overnight.

UPDATE 11:07 a.m.

BC Wildfire said a wildfire burning 12 kilometres west of Osoyoos is believed to be human caused.

“The cause for that fire is a vehicle fire that spread to the grass adjacent,” said Hannah Swift, fire information officer for BC Wildfire.

Two helicopters and 40 firefighters were on the ground as of Tuesday afternoon as BC Wildfire responded to what they have termed the Richter Creek wildfire located 12 kilometres west of Osoyoos.

The wildfire has grown to an estimated 250 hectares since it was discovered on Monday.

An evacuation alert was issued on Monday evening by the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen emergency operations centre for one property located in Cawston.

According to BC Wildfire, the fire is considered out of control and more resources are expected to arrive to assist in fighting the fire.

Update 9:36 a.m.

Richter Creek wildfire near Osoyoos is now estimated at 250 hectares.

Update 8:49 p.m.

According to a tweet from the BC Wildfire Service Richter Creek wildfire west of Osoyoos is now estimated to be 80 hectares in size.

An evacuation alert is in place by the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen Emergency Operations Centre for one property due to the Richter Creek wildfire.

B.C. Wildfire Service crews are responding to a wildfire 15 kilometres west of Osoyoos.

Fire information services said they’re calling it the Richter Creek wildfire and is stretched out 15 hectares fire wide with smoke from Osoyoos and the B.C. Highway 3.

“The fire is classified as out of control and is expected to spread quickly so it may be a lot more than 10 hectares fairly soon,” said Fire Information Services Hannah Swift.

She said air support responded earlier, but were called off due to smoke.

There are two helicopters on route and 28 firefighters on ground fighting the fire.

No structures are in dangers at this time.
