An Oliver fruit packer company has been fined over $19,000 by WorksafeBC for various safety infractions related to one of its tractors.

The fine was imposed on Sept. 8 following WorkSafe observing a worker for Okanagan Sunshine Fruit Packers travelling along the shoulder of a highway on one of the company’s agricultural tractors.

The tractor’s rollover protective structure was lowered, and an investigation by WorkSafe found that the seatbelt was broken and that the tractor had not been inspected before being used.

Failing to ensure that mobile equipment was used with the rollover protective structure is a high-risk safety violation.

According to the penalty statement from WorkSafeBC, the company had repeated violations for lack of a functioning lap belt and not doing pre-use inspections of the tractor.

As a result, a total fine of $19,449.26 was leveled against the company.
