While the COVID-19 pandemic meant many universities and colleges did not offer in-person classes, Summerland students were able to gather for study time during the fall and winter.

Three Summerland churches offered spaces for students as the University of Summerland provided assistance for post-secondary students.

Raja Gupta, a high school teacher at Summerland Secondary School, approached churches in town, asking for spaces where students could study. The Summerland Baptist Church, Summerland Alliance Church and Julia Street Community Church offered their spaces for the students.

“We offer no degrees and we have no professors,” he said.

“It’s a way to have some social interaction while studying. It’s a collaborative study space for students,” said Calum Bird, a university student involved with the program.

In fall, 13 students registered for the program. Organizers later expanded the program for students in Oliver.

Participants in the program needed to register in advance and had to sign in each time they attended.
