1922 - 2016

Anna “Rita” Mabel Lucier (nee Mackenzie) passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on the evening of Friday, September 9, 2016. Known as ‘Meme’ to her large and extended family, she recently celebrated her 94th birthday. She was a kind, generous, loving, forgiving, compassionate, accepting and gracious woman who taught us what love looked like. Her family came first in her life, but the walls were constantly adjusting to make room for newcomers! She was a woman of faith, had a passion for the poor and disenfranchised and believed deeply in her civic responsibilities.

Born to John Allen ‘Al’ and Bernadette Mackenzie in Stellarton, Nova Scotia on August 7, 1922, her father was a coal miner and her mother taught at Peggy’s Cove. They moved to Windsor in about 1927 where she attended school, met, fell in love with and married Art Lucier at the age of 18.

Rita is survived by 10 living children, Pat (Patti), Kathrine, Angie, Linda, Marian (Norm), Sam, Ben, Moe (Jewel), Irene (Kevin) and Oscar. She has 42 grandchildren, great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; siblings Ann-Marie McDonald, Janet (Larry), Jean (Bob), Smokey (Betty), Red (Bev), Jim (Helen), Butch (Nikki) and her sister-in-law, Sister Esther and brother-in-law Mac and nieces and nephews too numerous to mention.

She is predeceased by her husband Art, who passed away January 2011, months after celebrating their 70th anniversary--we know they are finally together again spiritually reunited with her brother Father Don Wilson, her parents, many siblings and many in-laws, cousins and friends.

Our deepest thanks to Dr. David Surkan for taking care of our mom’s medical needs for over 40 years and heartfelt thanks for the sensitivity and care extended by the staff at the Hamlets.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 1296 Main St., Penticton, on Friday, September 16, 2016--10:30 a.m. with interment at Lakeview Cemetery, Penticton. Reception will follow at the Penticton
