Nov 3, 1922 - Dec 24, 2017
Lydia was the youngest of ten children born in Radycza, Poland to German parents, William and Frederika Hegel. She was feisty and fiercely independent with a cheeky twinkle in her eye. She fled Poland during the second world war and went to Germany before immigrating to Canada to Dauphin, Manitoba, in the spring of 1951.

In the fall of 1951 she married Ernie Bessel and together they worked hard on their farm. When Ernie passed away in 1994, she decided to move to Penticton where one brother and one sister already lived. She became active in Concordia Lutheran Church.

She also enjoyed making delicious dinners for her family and friends until her health deteriorated and she had to go live in a nursing home.

Lydia was predeceased by her parents, siblings, husband and 6 of her nieces and nephews.

She is survived and mourned by numerous nieces and nephews both in Canada and in Germany.

The family would like to thank the staff at Village by the Station for their loving care for the last 3 years of her life.

A memorial service will take place Jan. 6, 2017 - 11:00 a.m. at Concordia Lutheran Church, 2600 South Main St., Penticton.

Lydia's cremated remains will be buried next to her husband in Dauphin at a later date.
