McPherson, Stan

July 7, 1927 Summerland BC – June 1, 2017 Penticton, BC

June 1 marks the end of an era. William Stanley (Stan) McPherson passed away after fighting a valiant battle with cancer. Stan is survived by his wife of 12 years, Helen, sons Locke (Debra), Larry (Josie), Doug (Karen), and grandchildren Sean, Jennifer (Chris), and Lisa (Gordon). Stan also leaves behind his blended family members, Leslie (Dave), Graham, and Sharon (Mark). He is survived by many, many nieces and nephews. Stan was predeceased by his first wife Barbara in 2002, and granddaughter Robyn.

William Stanley McPherson was born in Summerland in 1927, went to school there and continued to live his entire life in the Okanagan Valley. His life was filled to the brim with optimism and enthusiasm. The twinkle in his eye and the bounce in his step carried him through life. He had a ready smile and embraced each new day. Stan’s long working career began at Grant King Men’s Wear in 1947 and ended when he turned it over to the younger generation in the mid eighties.

His hobbies were many. He loved gardening, skiing, boating and golfing. He was community-minded, and over the years he was a member of the Kiwanis, served as the President of the Penticton and District Retirement Centre, and volunteered for the Japanese Garden Society. Stan was a quiet gentleman, but he was willing to extend a helping hand to anyone who asked. His positive attitude and ever-present smile will be missed by all who knew him.

The family would like to thank everyone who gave Stan care and compassion these past few weeks, including the staff at the Penticton General Hospital. In particular, we would like to thank Dr. John Surkan for taking care of Stan and offering support to the family. Last but not least, words cannot express our gratitude to Helen McPherson, who has been our rock of stability for the past six months, and stood by Stan’s side for the past 12 years.

A gathering for friends and family will be held on Sunday, June 25, at the Bufflehead Restaurant, Penticton Lakeside Resort from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
