MPs who voted in favour of Motion 312 are not anti-women (Kudos to Albas: Letters to the editor, Oct. 10).
The motion simply asked for a Parliamentary Committee made up of MPs from all parties to look into a 400-year-old part of the Criminal Code, which states that a child becomes a human being only at the moment of complete birth, and to answer questions concerning the unborn.
When the code was written there were no ultrasounds, doctors were not able to perform surgery on the unborn as they do today, and there were no neonatal intensive care units where staff work to save the lives of premature babies. Science was not as advanced as it is today.
To amend the Criminal Code would be to bring it in line with what we already know.
To ignore reality and try to stifle debate is not good for democracy and not in the best interests of women and children.
