EDITORIAL: Kampe’s contributions

Over the years, David Kampe has consistently refused to have the spotlight turned on himself.

David Kampe isn’t a man that seeks the spotlight. Looking back through our archives for a photo of him to go with the story about his latest donation — $3 million to Penticton Regional Hospital for a MRI machine — we couldn’t find a single one.

Over the years, Kampe has donated millions — honestly, it’s hard to estimate how much he has donated to the community. There is his unwavering support of Peach Festival, especially the Grande Parade; many donations in support of PRH; paying for tickets so youth can attend Penticton Vees games and many more examples of his generosity, probably more than we know about.

“Because of David’s contribution’s to Peachfest, it has allowed us to be the largest free festival in Western Canada. Thanks to his support Peachfest continues to grow every year and we couldn’t do it without him,” said Don Kendall, president of the Penticton Peach Festival.

Over the years, though, Kampe has consistently refused to have the spotlight turned on himself. He prefers, instead, that we media types focus on the group he is helping out.

There is, of course, nothing wrong with receiving accolades for doing good works. There are many philanthropists in this town, who very much deserve all the honours they receive. Our community would be a lot less agreeable place without all the people who donate, whether it be a large or small amount.

But there is something to be said for such a modest man who sets such an example with his generosity. When it comes to commendations, Kampe deserves a lot more than he is getting. The level of generosity shown deserves to be noted in Penticton’s history as one of the great influences on our community.

So we would like to address the pat on the back deficit a little by offering our own gratitude to David Kampe and his family. Your generosity has improved the lives of everyone in this community, and for that, we thank you.
