Letter: Artist Odjig will be missed

Few people will be aware that we have lost a well-known artist in Daphne Odjig this week.

Few people will be aware that we have lost a well-known artist in Daphne Odjig this week.

Daphne through Canada Post displayed some of her art work in a beautiful Christmas stamp in 2002 and again in 2011 with a selection of her paintings. In 2002 Canada Post selected her Genisis painting for one of three Aboriginal Art works for the Christmas selection. The other two artists were Cecil Youngfox and Irene Katak Anquitlaq.

In February 2011 Canada Post once more selected art work from Daphne Odjig for three postage stamps, the Pow-wow Dancer, Pow.wow and Spiritual Renewal. All three of these stamps are a feast for the eye and a welcome addition to anyone’s stamp collection. Daphne was born on Sept. 11, 1919 and passed away on Oct. 1, 2016. Her art work has enriched our lives and as a stamp collector and admirer of arts she will be missed.

Our heartfelt condolences go to the family.
