Letter: Cannabis is going to create huge tax returns

Tax revenue from the sale of any government-approved cannabis outlet should stay with the city

According to reports, the legalizing of cannabis is going to create huge tax returns to the federal and provincial governments.

My thought is that the tax revenue from the sale of any government approved cannabis outlet in a municipality should stay in the municipality. Why? Because the municipalities will have to pay the cost of policing any illegal activity related to the sale and use of cannabis within their jurisdiction.

Back in the 90s the municipalities were allowed to keep the revenue from all speeding offences within their jurisdiction because the cities were having to pay 92 per cent of the cost of the police controlling traffic violations on their streets.

Let’s appeal to the provincial and federal governments to apply the same rule for policing the use of cannabis.
