Letter: Direction of Penticton city council

There appears to be hope with the current City of Penticton council

Penticton Western News letters to the editor.

The previous City of Penticton council pretty well voted in unison on all major existing or new initiatives.

Coun. Judy Sentes commented on the fact that she was proud of how that council got along in conducting civic affairs. This was not necessarily an asset when you are assessed by the residents in a scientific poll to have an approval rating of roughly 20 per cent.

The theme was vibrancy and growth, while spending untold amounts of tax dollars. Basically, it was a “chamber of commerce council,” and the objectives of council did not coincide with those of the general population at large. Add to that a notable lack of common sense, poor decision making, a lack of transparency to the point of covering up botched operations with non-disclosure agreements and completely ignoring all resident input. Not a record that bears repeating.

There appears to be hope with the current council, as we appear to have a faction (although in the minority) that appears to respect and give consideration to the wishes and priorities of the residents at large. I said hope because we have seen that the taxpayer, in general, can do little (but complain) except at election time, and even that does not guarantee change.
