Letter: End of democracy

Do we now let politicians rule at will without regards to where our freedoms came from?

Elections are upon us, but how many still remember the meaning of democracy?

During the Skaha lake fiasco, I was horrified at the change of attitude of democratic rights and ideals. Politicians who we were supposed to set democratic examples did the opposite and ignored the public and previous park dedications.

Shame on all current members of council and mayor for showing the democratic process can be twisted to whatever fulfills their Dream Team agenda. Not one of you deserve to be re-elected. Shame also to the ‘me generation’ that also ignored the democratic process.

Unfortunately, it is not just Penticton. Many of the younger generation have not been subjected to grandparents war stories of relatives lost in war trying to preserve those rights or taught the importance of democracy.

Proof is when I see leaders like Donald Trump still getting a large support while breaking all the democratic rules. Times have changed, freedoms are removed and the power of the people diminishing.

Do we now let politicians rule at will without regards to where our freedoms came from? Please get out and vote. Vote for who will respect the public and everyones rights, not self-serving politicians.
