The Penticton and Area Cycling Association (PACA) strongly discourages the City of Penticton’s plan to purchase additional land surrounding the South Okanagan Events Centre for car parking.
This plan continues to induce demand for parking in the area at great cost, increasing traffic and pollution, while reducing safety on the surrounding streets.
In order to reduce the demand for parking, we encourage the city to pursue proven 21st-century solutions such as: charging a market rate for the available stalls, investing in better public transit options at peak demand times, and investing in safe cycling and walking facilities for all ages.
We look forward to engagement with the City of Penticton to pursue alternatives using safe, sustainable, best-practice transportation infrastructure.
