Letter: Safe bike lanes needed

Penticton, a town famous for its biking events, has shot itself in the foot

Penticton Western News letters to the editor.

From a forward-thinking, design point-of-view, who goofed up on the narrowing of Main Street and forgot to add safe bike lanes?

Sure the sidewalks are wider, aside for a few months a year on markets days once a week, these walkways are never cheek by jowl with citizens.

How about painting a solid line down the outer edge of the newly widened walkways for bike lanes? Where else can you squeeze them in on Main Street?

Penticton, a town famous for its biking events, has shot itself in the foot by neglecting to address this growing mode of green transportation. Have you seen how many seniors, myself included, are now recapturing the joy of cycling with e-bikes? This is a growing trend and we need safe lanes to travel in town.

The way main street is now, I don’t fancy having to dodge car doors being opened as I pedal by and possibly sustaining an injury. Drivers simply do not take cyclists into account, ever.

Come on Penticton, make the city safe for all cyclists.
