LETTER: Shark in the water

Each July 1 long weekend I faithfully watch Jaws (the movie), as it reminds me of our town of Penticton.

Each July 1 long weekend I faithfully watch Jaws (the movie), as it reminds me of our town of Penticton.

There is a line in the movie when the sheriff wants to close the beaches, and the mayor sternly sounds “We can’t close the beaches.”

Like Amity Island in the movie, Penticton is a tourist town. We all depend on the tourists for support of our town.

Parking meters equates to me the shark of Jaws. Our beaches are our main source of attraction for tourists. Look at all the motels along Lakeshore. Besides, the meters would look quite ugly standing guard along the lakeshore waiting to be fed.

Keep making it difficult for easy access to beaches, the channel and other points of entertainment, and soon tourists will find another place to go that is more tourist friendly.

This whole valley has beaches. Okanagan Falls and Summerland are not that far away.

Council will in effect close the beaches.
