Apex Ski Club members delivering solid performances

Skiers get ready for Speed event in Whistler

Marcus Athans of the Apex Ski Club earned bronze in the GS competition in the BC Alpine Under-16 event at Red Mountain in Rossland Jan. 16.

Athans also placed seventh in another GS race and 10th in slalom. ASC coach Jorgen Anderson said his performance put him just shy of qualifying for the Canada Winter Games in Prince George.

Athans, 14, is in his first season skiing and is ranked No.1 in B.C. for his age group. Also skiing well in Rossland was Kyle Blaser, 14, finishing 10th.

"It was a really good learning experience for the other kids," said Anderson. "Go to those events and see how you stack up in the province."

The weekend before at Apex Mountain Resort in U-12 girls, Ana Large won gold as did Noa Rogers twice, while, Ana Large took silver. In U12 boys, Heming Sola captured two gold medals, while Jake Erickson earned silver and bronze. In U14 girls, Kayley Davies captured two gold medlas and took silver. Ella Pasin and Agatka Koczij earned bronze. In U14 boys, Reece Howden won two gold medals, Athans won gold and silver, while his brother Isaac also won gold and bronze. Blaser earned a bronze medal.

Now the skiers are getting ready for the U16 to 18 Speed event in Whistler on Feb. 2. Provincials are at the end of the month, while for the U12 group, provincial are in March at Sun Peaks in Kamloops.
