Bid process open for future winter and summer games

The B.C. Games Society has launched the bid process to select the communities to host the B.C. Summer and Winter Games in 2016 and 2018.

The B.C. Games Society has launched the bid process to select the communities to host the B.C. Summer and Winter Games in 2016 and 2018.

Bid packages have been sent to community mayors across the province.  Bidding communities are required to submit information on event hosting history, available venues for sport and accommodation and evidence of community support.  The deadline is Sept. 10, 2012.

“The BC Summer and BC Winter Games are an important pathway to developing our emerging elite athletes, and a celebration of our province,” said minister of community, sport and cultural development Ida Chong. “Host communities benefit from increased tourism and recreation dollars, and legacies such as improved infrastructure. I encourage every B.C. community to bid for the Games and become a leader in sport.”

The B.C. Games feature the province’s best young developing athletes and contribute to volunteer and community development.  The B.C. Games Society works directly with host communities providing valuable resources and event management expertise.

“Hosting the B.C. Games is considered a highlight in a community’s history,” said president and CEO of the B.C. Games Society Kelly Mann.  “The tremendous energy and community engagement that is generated provides memorable experiences for athletes and citizens alike.”

Since 1978, 38 different B.C. communities have hosted these premier multisport events.  The 2012 B.C. Winter Games will take place in Vernon this February and the 2012 B.C. Summer Games in Surrey in July.  Mission will host the 2014 B.C. Winter Games and Nanaimo will host the 2014 B.C. Summer Games.
