Aydar Suniev is one of the newest members of the Calgary Flames.

The Penticton Vees forward was selected in the third round (80th overall) by the Flames during the 2023 NHL Draft on Thursday morning, June 29, in Nashville.

“I’m really excited to get drafted by Calgary and I can’t wait to get started,” Suniev said in a Flames Twitter post.

Suniev finished third in BCHL scoring in 2022-2023, amassing 90 points in 50 games.

In his lone BCHL season, he helped the Vees capture their second consecutive Fred Page Cup.

The 18-year-old became the second Vees player from last season to be selected in the 2023 NHL Draft, with his former linemate Bradly Nadeau taken in the first round by the Carolina Hurricanes.

“Watching [Bradly] get drafted yesterday by Carolina, then hearing my name today, it’s been amazing. I’m honoured to be a part of the Calgary Flames,” Suniev said in an interview with the BCHL.
