The Wine Country Racing Association (WCRA) had a great opening day on May 1.

The WCRA attracted a crowd of fans like no season-opener has seen. More than 61 drivers flocked to the track from British Columbia and Washington state.

Here are the weekend’s trophy winners:

Street Bracket: Riley Martin from Oliver won the Mustang showdown against Osoyoos' Tim Hiebert. Martin drove a 1980, while Hiebert a '90.

In the pro bracket, Paul Fode of Kelowna raced his 1970 Plymouth Cuda past Chip Sabyan of Oliver in his 1984 Olds Cutless. In the Super Pro: Brad Baxendale of Osoyoos and his 1969 Beaumont zipped by Kayle Shaw of Penticton and his 1972 Chevy Vega. Grand Forks' Art Raymon won the bike/sled with  a 2001 Suzuki Katana,  beating out Chase Cranna of Kamloops and his 2003 Suzuki.

Reaction Time: Two perfect .500 lights were picked up on Sunday. Trophies were given to Martin and Osoyoos' Neil Ericson.

The spring segment of drag racing will continue at RPM with back-to-back weekends May 29 and June 5. The gates will open at 9 a.m. Racing will begin at 10 a.m. Final elimination rounds will start at 1 p.m.
