Lakers lows and highs at tournaments

The Pen High Lakers junior girls basketball team went 1-3 in Abbotsford last weekend.

The Lakers opened the tournament hosted by W.J. Mouat by edging No. 3 ranked Brookswood 55-53. Top scorers for the Lakers were Hayden Craig with 16 points grabbed six rebounds, Georgia Hurry scored 14 points and collected 12 rebounds. Natasha Reimer had 12 rebounds to go with eight points.

"Finally we broke through against a top-ranked team,” said Lakers coach Chris Terris. “We've been close but unable to close the door.  It was a big win."

In their first game Saturday, the Lakers endured a big 51-28 to No. 2 ranked Oak Bay. Craig led the Lakers with 14 points.

Their final game was a 35-30 loss to York House. Again Craig led with 16 points while Hurry scored six.

"As happy as we were with the weekend and the chance to compete against the best the province has to offer, we ended on a sour note,” said Terris. “We were up nine going into the fourth, but had a collective melt down."

As of Jan. 31, the South Kamloops Titans ranked No. 1, while St. Thomas Aquinas Fighting Saints (North Vancouver) jumped two spots to No. 2 and the Oak Bay Breakers at three. The Lakers jumped five spots to No. 7. Kelowna dropped six positions to 11.

 

Senior girls

The Lakers went 2-1 during the Kelowna Secondary annual tournament last weekend. The Lakers opened with a 78-40 loss against host KSS. Bryanne Francisco finished with 10 points and three assists. Kelsey Desroches also contributed six points and five rebounds. In the second game, the Lakers defeated South Delta 68-37 with Bri Hrynyk and Dani Pratt chipping in 16 and nine points respectively. In their final game, the Lakers handed Salmon Arm a 82-55 loss. Francisco was outstanding from three-point territory scoring six times and finishing with 22 points.  Contributing 21 points was Hrynyk.  Adra Greig was player of the game with 10 points. Bryanne Francisco was awarded a tournament all-star for her performance.
