THE PEN HIGH LAKERS senior girls rugby team missed the AAA Okanagan Valley playoffs after going winless

The Pen High Lakers senior girls rugby team will have to wait until next season to make a playoff push.

Their season ended last week with them failing to qualify for the South Okanagan AAA playoffs and without a win. The Lakers had to fit a game in Salmon Arm last week and if a team forfeits a game, then they don't qualify for the playoffs. Lakers coach Mike Bevan feels had that not happened, the Lakers would have qualified.

The Lakers schedule had two games the last week on May 2 and 5, but Bevan said there was no way to have the players recovered in time to play on May 5. They decided to forfeit. They also had injuries.

Bevan said it was a young team that only loses one player, which he sees as a positive. He hopes the majority return with the new faces. Julia Speirs is the lone graduating player. Bevan has optimism the Lakers will be strong next spring.

"Some of the girls started showing a bit of promise toward the end," he said. "Some of the girls looked really good. They all seem pretty enthusiastic."

It's unknown whether Bevan will return to coach. He hasn't decided yet, but it's also the schools decision.

"I probably would like to because there is a good crop of girls coming up," said Bevan.
