Like father, like son.

Eighteen-year-old Jackson Niedermayer is picking up where his old man left off. The Penticton Vees forward was recently named the B.C. Hockey League (BCHL) Player of the Week.

The sophomore Vee, son of NHL great Scott Niedermayer, helped his club to a perfect start to the 2020 portion of their schedule with wins over the Vernon Vipers on New Year’s Day, and weekend victories over the Salmon Arm Silverbacks and Victoria Grizzlies.

In those three games Niedermayer collected five goals and six assists, including his first four-point night and first hat trick in the 8-4 drubbing of the Grizzlies Saturday night at the South Okanagan Events Centre (SOEC).

In 40 games so far this season he’s racked up 31 points, 16 goals and 15 assists and boasts a .78-point-per-game average to help the Vees to a substantial Interior Division standings lead.

He is currently fifth in team scoring and second in goals through the club’s 42 games. After his BCHL career ends he is committed to the University of Arizona State.

Niedermayer and teammates return to action Wednesday with their fourth Wicked Wednesday on Jan. 8 when they play host the Langley Rivermen with puck drop at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets are available at the Valley First Box Office as well as online at ValleyFirstTix.com

A special price of $10.55 will be available with the purchase of a ticket to Wednesday night’s game. The promotion ends at 6:30 p.m. that night.

This weekend the team will pay homage to the 1955 World Championship Vees by wearing retro jerseys in a home-and-away series with the Trail Smoke Eaters. They will be in Trail Friday and back home Saturday at the SOEC with a 6 p.m. start.
